Time to Stop Hotlinking

Candy Corn

Candy Corn

When I create graphics or photos, I do not mind if people download them and re-use them on a website. Most of my work, unless created for someone specifically, is open source or creative commons with the stipulations there are are no alterations or re-distributions, no hotlinking, no commercial use unless permission is granted to use for commercial purposes, and credit should be given to the owner unless other permissions have been granted.

Personally, I do not think this is too much to ask.

  • No alterations because I did create the work or photograph the work.
  • No hotlinking because I do not mind if my work is used, but my bandwidth is what I pay for. Those hotlinking to my graphics, photos, or other works are not paying for my bandwidth. I do not make enough money to support hosting my work for everyone else to use the bandwidth.
  • I ask that credit be given to the author simply because it is work I created and I do not appreciate someone else taking credit for the time and energy I spent creating the work. Would you want someone to take credit for work you spent hours, days, weeks or even months on?
  • No commercial use without consent

So, in summary, I do not mind if you use my images if you like them. I am proud to see my work in other places because someone else likes my work. If one person sees on item I have created, likes it, and uses it, then I have acomplished something.

But, if you do use the works, please follow the simple rules above that I have defined.

There are a couple of advantages to people hot linking though…

    1) You get a link into your site from the hotlinkers site which might contribute to your search engine ranking (if you are bothered about rankings).
    2) You can replace the image with a new one with text on the image such as ‘come and visit my site’ and you then get a free advert.

Thank you for your help in answering a couple questions I had on this very subject you just wrote about.

Great post. The internet seems to be littered with such rubbish these days, so this post made a refreshing change.
