As I have noted on other posts (see the Googlebot Meta Tags post), the description element is another part of HTML that has uses with search engines. Well designed websites use the description element not only for keywords and a simple description of the page, but also it can control how the page shows up in search engines (once again, a better explanation of this can be found in the Googlebot Meta Tags post )
For WordPress users, there are various plugins that can be used. Another way to control the description of a post is to alter the header.php of the theme to use the_excerpt for the description.

Yes, Google does use and weigh all of the Meta data that you provide. Maybe not as heavily as it once did when people filled their description and keywords with 50 million terms and phrases, but it still does. This is a useful technique.

Great tip. I often find that if I put in a good meta tag description, Google and other Search Engines will end up using it in their listings.

Yes of course its a great tool to use, well at least i think that. Not everyone does. Lots of people have different opinions, to me its a nice way, because blogging helps me share people more about rings that we sell.
